Yes, adequate protein intake is important during pregnancy...but you need lots of other nutrients too. I would just make sure that your "protein rich" eating habits aren't limiting your from getting enough plant foods as well (fruits, veggies, and whole grains). Also, be sure to take a prenatal vitamin!
We definitely need protein during pregnancy, however, one of the most common dietary deficiencies is micronutrients. These are not in traditional protein sources. I would encourage eating fresh organic vegetables of every color every day of your pregnancy. This will help turn on optimal genetic expression in your baby's genes. Healthy organic and grass-fed, hormone-free protein sources are also the best for your baby. Protein is not necessarily the key. Micronutrients, healthy relationships, exercise in pregnancy and adequate sleep will give your baby optimal health.
Hello and congratulations on your pregnancy! Protein is crucial during pregnancy because it is the building block for all of our cells and is required for healthy growth and development. Good sources of protein include animal protein such as chicken, beef, eggs, and fish. It is very
important to make sure all these proteins are cooked thoroughly and well to prevent food-borne illness. A diet that is balanced in protein, carbohydrates, and fat is important for a healthy pregnancy along with getting adequate amounts of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). It is best to consult with a Dietitian to understand how much protein you need during pregnancy. I would be happy to help you on your journey if you would like more individualized support.
Congratulations on your pregnancy.
A balanced diet is encouraged during pregnancy to support the growth of the fetus and maintain the mothers health. Protein is an essential component of a balanced diet. If the daily recommended amount of protein is lacking, the baby could be underweight and or other complications could arise.
