Kidney infection?

I have a friend who had kidney cancer, on the left-hand side and had his kidney removed about 2 yrs ago. He is now experiencing pain on the right-hand side in the kidney area and has seen the doctor, who has said that it's a kidney infection. They did a urine sample and blood test and prescribed him Amoxicillin 500mg to take once a day. Is this normal practice Whenever I have been prescribed antibiotics, I have always had to take at least 3 a day? Also, because of his recent cancer, would it not be normal practice to send him for a scan just to be sure?

His kidney function is not perfect. He has one kidney, every drug has to be renally adjusted. He should get an ultrasound, eventually. Contrast dye from scan can damage the remaining good kidney
The kidney will concentrate this antibiotic in the urine so a person does not need as high a dose.
