Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Kidney Stones

Natural treatment for kidney stone?

Once in a while, I get kidney stones. I've never gone to the hospital for them as they have been relatively small. Is there a natural way to treat and prevent them that doesn't involve medication?

How much water are you drinking? Your kidneys work best when it has a good amount of water available. Men should drink around 1 gallon and women around 90oz sometimes more based on lifestyle and exercise. Dehydration can potentially lead to kidney stones too. Just make sure you are drinking enough water first before adding in other treatments for it. Adding lemon into the water can also be beneficial.
Please consult with a doctor or a naturopathic doctor.
Find out what type they are and change your diet

Drinking at least 3 liters of water per day is recommended. Avoid high salt and oxalate diet. Sometimes medications are required depending on the condition and lab tests.
You should find out the reason for stone formation.
You should need :
1. Stone analysis to see what kind of kidney stones you have.
2. Urine studies to do the metabolic work up for stone .
3. Drink plenty of water to have minimum 2.5 l urine per day .
4. Cutting down salt and high protein will also help.
Depending on stone analysis and metabolic work up will decide further treatment.

The best way to prevent kidney stones is to be very mindful of what you eat. If you get them once in a while there could be something in your diet that your kidneys are not properly eliminating.

There are plants of different strengths that dissolve stones but corn silk is a mild and gentle one that works effectively.

I recommend you see a natural health practitioner to better asses your case and make the right suggestion. I hope that helps.
In order to answer this accurately it would be important to know what type of stone you are getting. Ask your doctor how to collect stones to be analyzed next time. This will help you figure out some nutritional interventions on how to work toward preventing future stones.
This is an excellent question. A lot of kidney stones could be caused by decreased fluid intake which can make the urine very concentrated and increases the risk for kidney stones. By increasing fluid intake to set a goal of urine flow of more than 3 liters a day, you can decrease the risk of forming some kidney stones. Also, increasing intake of citrus fruits can decrease risk of kidney stones.
