Weight loss is the key to help knee pain. Since knee is the weight bearing joint, it's very important to lose weight and keep the range of motion in the knee joint. It will be easier to walk with weight loss. Knee pain can result from many causes, however, if someone is obese, degenerative arthritis of the knee is most likely diagnosis. Physical therapy would help as well. A knee X-ray will help diagnose osteoarthritis.
No. You need to see a physician and find out what causes your knee pain. There are treatments which can fix your problem.

No, you don't need to keep walking with your knee pain as we have different ways to cure your knee conditions.
Exercise is important, but limiting damage to joints is also very important. Pain is a symptom of something negatively occurring and should be evaluated by your doctor.
Of course it depends on why you have knee pain but generally speaking brief walking should not hurt even if the knee is painful.
