“Smells?”
Do older people sometimes smell weird stuff other than the furnace, char from a gas stove, washing machine, vents, etc? I live with a 76 year old and I don't smell any of these things.

You most likely have permanent damage to your olfactory tissues for age, repeated upper respiratory infections, microvascular disease related to diabetes. Could be a risk factor if you cannot smell smoke.
