He can examine your knee, take xrays if needed and give you a diagnosis and treatment plan.
It really depends on the cause. If it is related to a tendinitis, they will prescribe therapy and anti-inflammatory medications. For arthritis, sometimes cortisone or "Gel" injections can be given, along with therapy and anti-inflammatory medications. If it is sever then joint replacement can be discussed.

For thing like meniscus and ACL tears, arthroscopic surgery can be performed if other conservative treatments fail to provide relief.
Orthopedic doctors are the knee doctors. We diagnose and treat knee problems to relieve pain and restore knee function every day. We use medication, physical therapy, braces, injections and surgery. That's what we do.
Hope it helps!!

Lots of things. First they can examine you and perhaps obtain x-rays and try to determine what the source of your knee pain is. They can provide treatment by prescribing appropriate medication, prescribing physical therapy and if necessary obtain MRI study. They will then be able to inform you if your condition may require surgery.
Figure out what is causing it and treat it to make it better.

Great Question! Knee pain is my specialty and it can vary based on what is wrong and how the injury occurred. Knee pain can be anything from a muscle strain, tendonitis, a torn meniscus or even a fracture, and all are treated differently. If your knee pain has been going on for over a month and has not gotten better with standard "rest, ice, compression, elevation," then you should see an orthopedic specialist to better assess your knee.
