Radiologist Questions Anomaly scan

What deformities in the growing baby can be confirmed in an anomaly scan?

I am 5 months pregnant and I am due for my anomaly scan. I would like to know what deformities in the baby can be seen through this. Can mental and congenital defects also be detected apart from any physical defects?

Abnormalities in extremities and face.
Congenital defects can be detected. Down’s syndrome can be suggested based on the exam but would need to be confirmed with lab values. Mental deficiencies cannot be determined on these ultrasounds.

Thank you

Mental abnormalities can be implied from anatomic abnormalities. With regard to what can be seen, the list is extensive.....

All the best.
Only defects that produce anatomic abnormally can be seen by ultrasound. Genetic tests such as amniocentesis can detect many genetic abnormalities.
Sonography can detect many types of anomalies, including those related to the brain and spine.
Hi. Physical congenital defects can be detected with a high level obstetrical ultrasound during the second trimester. This includes brain abnormalities. I am not sure what you mean by “mental.” If you mean physical abnormalities of the brain or spinal cord, the answer is yes. Your Ob-Gyn should be able to answer more specifically.

Thanks,

There are many types of anomalies which can be seen on this type of ultrasound scan. This is referred to as a level III evaluation. Physical deformities are many times with some exception a manifestation of congenital/genetic problems. If a fetus has anencephaly, this could also be detected. In addition there are certain blood test which could be utilized to detect congenital issues.
Nothing that a biopsy can't provide and a biopsy is done at an earlier age, your OB should know this. A US at 20 weeks can supplement this.
