Pediatric Oncologist Questions Childhood Cancer

What does proton therapy involve?

My daughter is 4 years old and has been diagnosed with initial stage cancer. The doctor has recommended the proton therapy to eradicate the disease. What does this therapy involve? Is it painful?

Thank you for your question. Proton therapy is a way to treat tumors with an accurate beam of protons aimed at the tumor. It is generally not painful, and your child will need to hold still for it. After treatment the skin or scalp can become irritated, and your child may feel fatigued or get headaches. Let your providers know if she develops any side effects.
