Pediatrician Questions Infectious Disease Specialist

What helps a congested child with covid?

My 9 year old son is congested and has the covid virus. What helps a congested child with covid?

Thanks for the question! There are two types of congestion - nasobronchial, with a productive cough, and lung, which if due entirely to COVID will have a non-productive (dry) cough. There are only symptomatic treatments - decongestants, steaming or humidifier for the nasobronchial type, and steaming or humidifier plus oxygen if needed for the lung type. The child should be examined by a pediatrician to determine if a chest x-ray or oxygen is needed.
