What is a lung PET scan?

My dad is 50 year old. He is a smoker, and he's getting this scan soon. What should he do to prepare?

Nothing specific. They will ask you to fast, but that is about it. They will tell you that.
-Know your medications and allergies
-Limited carbohydrate diet for 24 hours prior to the date of your appointment
-Do not eat or drink anything except water for 6 hours prior to the exam
-Drink plenty of water
-Take routine medications. Take your diabetic medication no less than 4 hours prior to the examination
-Arrive 15 to 30 minutes prior to your exam
-An IV will be started. In some cases, isotope and contrast are administered
-Duration of the exam is up to 2 hours
-Breathing instructions should be followed
-Hydrate after the examination
He needs to follow the pre PET instructions provided by the imaging center. No excessive exercise before the scan. NPO. If diabetic have this under good control prior to scan. No large sugar bolus or sugary drinks before the scan as F18 FDG is the most common agent used for PET scanning and is a glucose analog.
