Tests for knee pain include x-rays, MRIs and diagnostic injections. prior to considering these studies and depending on the amount of pain that you have you might want to try physical therapy for strengthening exercises. This can be very effective.

The first thing to do is see a physician (preferably a sports physician) for a history and physical examination.
X-Rays, CT Arthrograms and MRI's
The most important test is speaking with a knowledgeable physician who can analyze the pain, and examine you. Then a combination of x-ray and sometimes MRI if necessary.
If you have chronic knee pain the first thing you need is a diagnosis. There are multiple test to be done but the primary issue is for a specialist to take a good history and perform a physical exam and most likely x-rays would be appropriate. Beyond that special studies will depend on those families.
On exam: varus/valus (knock knee/bowlegged), acl/pcl laxity, mcl/lcl laxity, knee flexion (expected degrees greater than 120 degree)

X-rays (5 views AP, lateral, sunrise view [assess knee cap])

MrI: Evaluate meniscus integrity and ligament issues (partial or full tear)

Ultrasound: Assess dynamic motion of ligament/integrity and strength
In order to answer this question, we would have to start with an evaluation. The evaluation would allow to tailor a work-up for your specific issues, including whether imaging is needed. Generally speaking, x-rays and MRIs are options.
A MRI would be indicated for diagnostic purposes.
