Emergency Physician Questions Skin Infections

Another kid bit my child and the skin is broken. Should we go to the ER?

My son was bitten at school, by another classmate, and he didn't tell any of his teachers or go to the school nurse (trust me, I'm going to call the school asap and let them know that this happened under their watch). There's nothing visibly wrong with it--like it doesn't look infected. But should we take him to the ER just in case?

Is he vaccinated for hep B? This is the most contagious of things spread by bite. You do need to wash the wound thoroughly and keep a watch for infection. If you want tests run to make sure he is neg for hep B and HIV they will need to be repeated in several weeks. A test today will not show infection from a bite today.
