General Practitioner Questions Pneumonia

antibiotic resistance

I went to the emergency room earlier tonight and was told I had pneumonia and was prescribed augmentin. My main concern is this would be my 4th or 5th course of antibiotics this year. I'm worried that taking it would further increase my risk of antibiotic resistance. help! thank you!

This sounds quite extreme. 5 courses of antibiotics in one year? You should get a referral to an infection medicine specialist that can run some examinations to determine if you have an immune deficiency or what other causes there may be for your recurring infections.
Antibiotic resistance is not patient/human associated, rather a relationship between the bug and the drug. The more people use the antibiotic unnecessarily the more is the chance that the bug is going to develop resistance to that antibiotic, so it becomes useless, not just for
you, but for everyone. Everytime you would take the antibiotic you are increasing that chance for yourself and everyone else. That being said if you are genuinely sick and you have signs of a bacterial infection then you should not deny yourself an antibiotic, just make sure
you take them on time and finish the whole course. It is the prescribing doctor's job to ensure proper prescribing of the suitable antibiotic for every infection to avoid emerging resistant strains of bacteria, what we call super bugs.
It’s important to know why you had to take antibiotics for 4-5 times this year, and what sort of pneumonia you have?
Also is good to know your immunity status. For these reasons you should see your doctor ASAP, especially to solve the problem with your pneumonia which probably needs to be treated in hospital.
