Pediatrician Questions Premature Babies

Are preemie babies at risk for disabilities?

I have a high risk pregnancy and my doctor says that it's possible to have my baby a month and a half before his due date. Is it true that preemie babies have a high risk of pregnancy?

Yes. Please refer to the NICHD prematurity risk calculator free online resource to assess the estimated risks, and discuss with a neonatal specialist.
The more preterm the baby is the higher the risk of disability. Some can be minor but some like cerebral palsy can last a life time. However, having a baby just 6 weeks early is usually a low risk if they do not have a lot of trouble initially with respiratory distress

With good prenatal care during your pregnancy, preemie babies will do well. Your doctor will give you steroids before you deliver, which will help develop your baby’s lungs.
