Psychiatrist Questions Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Are there natural treatments for OCD?

My friend was diagnosed as having OCD recently and I want to help him get better. His doctor prescribed him with medication, but he's scared to take it. Are there natural remedies for OCD?

He could try cognitive behavioral therapy and/or neurofeedback treatment if he is afraid of taking medication. If that by itself does not bring the results desired than combine with medication.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is often quite helpful. This involves identifying the issue associated with a compulsion and then finding a behavior to grapple with the issue directly rather than using the compulsive response. This will result in anxiety, but with persistence, the anxiety will gradually diminish.

In our practice we use acupuncture among other treatments to treat disorders
OCD is a complex disorder manifesting itself in a number of different ways. The manifestations and the severity of the symptoms usually determine the approach. Mode of treatment varies with the patient. Common treatments include Cognitive Behavior Therapy (a specific type of psychotherapy), medication (often more than 1), and various forms of exercise or productive behaviors such as vigorous exercise. Natural medicines have not caught on & seem to be of use in only minor cases. It is common for OCD patients to be afraid of their medicines. This is usually a symptom of their disorder and gets in the way of treatment. It is felt that up to 90% of patients can be controlled with the disorder. I recommend treatment by a psychiatrist skilled in the treatment of this disorder.
