Adolescent Specialist Questions Behavior Changes

Are behavioral changes during puberty normal?

My daughter is 13 years old and her behavior is changing drastically. She was very close to me until now. Suddenly she has become distant. Is it just hormones or something else?

Yes, adolescent age is a period of time where they are trying to be independent and peer pressure is very difficult to deal with.
Behavioral changes are very common for teenagers. They can become more solitary, sleep more often and most certainly have more of an attitude.

However these same changes can occur with anxiety, depression other mental health disorders or stress. It is important to observe your teenager closely for other changes. If they are eating less, avoiding normal activities or gatherings with friends, having trouble sleeping or seem sadder than normal then you should be concerned.

Teenagers have stressors that many parents dont quite understand especially on social media. If the behaviors are disruptive to your family dynamic or seem to last longer than you expect, then speak with your child's physician.
