Periodontist Questions Gum Disease

I can see a black spot on my gums. What could it be?

I just happened to see a black spot on my gums at the back of my mouth. It's not bothering me but it is kind of disturbing. What could it be?

It can be from an old silver amalgam filling. When these old fillings are removed, sometimes a piece if filling material becomes embedded in the gum tissue. It's called an amalgam tattoo. It may also be melanin pigmentation. In people of color, much of the gum is dark pink but spots of dark brown are usually present. Definitely see an oral surgeon or periodontist for a,diagnosis
Any black spots should be checked out, this will rule out anything serious

It could be anything from an amalgam tattoo to a melanoma. You should get it checked as soon as possible.
Difficult to diagnose without seeing it. You should see a dentist to correctly diagnose your problem.
This could be a sign of periodontal (gum) disease or infection. Sometimes infection doesn’t cause pain or symptoms. It needs to be checked by a periodontist.
