“Can acupuncture cause miscarriage in early pregnancy?”
I am a 27 year old pregnant woman. I want to know if acupuncture can cause miscarriage in early pregnancy?

If you had a previous miscarriage, you should avoid acupuncture in early pregnancy. Even though the risk in acupuncture is very low, the needles do stimulate and promote the blood flow. My suggestion is that you avoid acupuncture for the first three months unless you really need the treatment.
Yes, acupuncture can cause miscarriage in early pregnancy if the practitioner not certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) as a Diplomate of Oriental Medicine (Dipl. O.M.) or Diplomate of Acupuncture (Dipl. Ac.). Or the practitioner acupuncturist doesn't have many experiences. Some acupuncture points cannot be used for pregnancy PT.

We have some specifics points who are contraindications during pregnancy, it will be safe when your doctor knows about it.
That could be a possibility. There are certain acupuncture points that are contra-indicated in pregnancy. If any of those were mistakenly treated, yes, it is possible.
Just as acupuncture can help with pregnancy, there are contraindicated and cautioned points that can harm pregnancy. The best way to avoid this is let your practitioner know that you are pregnant and they will do their best to avoid those harmful points/massages and safeguard the pregnancy. Of course make sure to check with your primary and OB-GYN to see if you are healthy enough for acupuncture.

Hi,
As long as needles are not put on lower abdomen area, and low back, then acupuncture is perfectly safe. Please consult your local acupuncturist.

Thank you for your question about acupuncture. It is extremely unlikely that acupuncture will cause a miscarriage. Many women use acupuncture to treat morning sickness - I have treated many pregnant women for this. There are certain points that are prohibited for acupuncture, and your acupuncturist will know which ones those are. After 3 months, abdominal points are prohibited.
I hope that is helpful!

Yes. Some acupuncture points are prohibited for pregnant women because it can cause miscarriage in early stages. Please consult with experienced acupuncturist for treatments.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Acupuncture won't cause miscarriage in early pregnancy unless a practitioner doesn't what he or she was doing
While there are points not to use during pregnancy in reality it is highly unlikely that a miscarriage would occur the safe way acupuncture is practiced in America even if those points were used. On top of that acupuncture is taught from day one what points should only be used for early pregnancy. What makes acupuncture amazing is that it is one of a few therapies allowed during pregnancy and revered for treating infertility.

No, acupuncture is very safe during pregnancy. In fact, we help patients during pregnancy that suffer from issues like nausea, low appetite, lower back pain, swollen legs, insomnia, etc.
There are acupuncture points that are contraindicated in pregnancy and acupuncturists will avoid using those points. In general, it is very safe and can be very beneficial for those who are having morning sickness, are at risk for miscarriage, or are having pain during pregnancy. It is frequently used during the latter stages of pregnancy to prepare the mothers body for labor and delivery.

Hi, acupuncturists are trained for specific treatment protocols for pregnant patients. Acupuncture, when done properly, can assist women in pregnancy. There are acupuncture points that should not be used during pregnancy and any acupuncturist who is licensed in their state and certified by NCCAOM will have the knowledge and ability to assist you to maintain a healthy pregnancy. I have helped several women who were considered high risk to carry the baby to term.
As with any medicine during pregnancy, a skilled practitioner will know what is safe and what is not during pregnancy. Acupuncture can be very safe and effective during pregnancy and labor helping with stress, nausea, bloating, headaches, and pain. If you work with a licensed and NCCAOM board certified acupuncturist they will know the exact acupuncture points to avoid during pregnancy.

Theoretically, yes. There are several points contraindicated for use during pregnancy, but in my experience, only weak pregnancies that were already high risk of miscarriage can be induced via acupuncture to stimulate miscarriage. I still would not use the contraindicated points on a strong pregnancy. In ancient China, these points would be used to terminate pregnancies when the developing child was sick or damaged.
That being said... many practitioners will not work with a new patient who is pregnant for legal reasons--anything that goes wrong usually gets blamed on the "witch doctor," one of the labels people in my field are given that I actually like.
I do personally work with new patients who are pregnant so I differ in that respect.

Acupuncture is not inherently dangerous. It has been used for women at risk for miscarriage to keep a healthy pregnancy and to carry full term. That being said there are a couple strongly down baring points on the body that should be avoided during pregnancy. Your Board Certified acupuncturist will know what to avoid to keep you and your pregnancy healthy and safe. Acupuncture should be a wonderfully healthy treatment for an expectant mother and can even be used during deliver and for post partum care.
It depends on which acupuncture points the acupuncturist choose. Some points the doctor is using can cause miscarriage in early pregnancy and cause give birth.
We know of no such cases. There are some acupuncture points that are contraindicated when pregnant but unless it is a high risk pregnancy to begin with, even needling these points in most cases will do no harm.
No. There are points that should be avoided during pregnancy but they would not trigger a miscarriage in early pregnancy.
Acupuncture is a safe form of modality to treat pregnancy. However, your acupuncturist most do a thorough examination before treating pregnancy to avoid a miscarriage.
Acupuncture is safe during all stages of pregnancy. A properly trained, licensed acupuncturist is trained to avoid harming any fetus during pregnancy. In fact, in early pregnancy, acupuncture can be great for morning sickness and other symptoms!
The science on acupuncture and miscarriage is mixed. The classical Chinese sources have a list of acupuncture points that are to be avoided in pregnancy. Modern investigations rarely back this up. That being said, there are points on the low abdomen and low back which should be avoided purely from an anatomical perspective.
I do a lot of work with pregnant women helping them with first trimester nausea as well as low back and hip pain. I tend to stay away from both the classically contraindicated points as well as the low back/low abdomen points - just to be on the safe side.
This is one of those times where, if you're going to try acupuncture to help manage some issue, you really need to be sure you're seeing a board certified, state licensed acupuncturist rather than a chiropractor, physical therapist or any one of a number of other providers who can technically offer "acupuncture" with a fraction the training. If you're outside CA, you can start with the "Find a Practitioner" look up at NCCAOM.org to get a list of local providers.
