Optometrist Questions Astigmatism

What care and precaution do I need to take for my son's cylindrical vision?

My son is 7 years old and has cylindrical power in his eyes. What are care and precautionary measures for me to take so that his condition improves or at least doesn't worsen.

It's very important for your son to wear his spectacle correction at all time so that he can develop his best vision and depth perception. Cylindrical correction is the shape of his cornea, so it will not change throughout his life.
I believe your son has astigmatism. He has to wear the correct spectacles. There are multiple articles that show reading small prints can make children's eyes weaker. Therefore, I recommend he use larger prints on his computer and cellphone.
Annual eye exams and glasses will manage your son's eye condition. This will change yearly as your son grows. This is normal for most children.
Moderate amount of astigmatism (cylindrical power) less than - 3.00 is of no concern unless it is worsening or the child is developing keratoconus (weakening of the cornea). Advise him not to rub the eyes, but use eye lubricants as needed. Have him wear sunglasses in the sun and if possible sport goggles if he is active in sports. Routine eye exams are necessary to maintain good vision with astigmatism.
Make sure that your son wears his glasses full time so that if he currently has refractive amblyopia there is some chance that he can develop 20.20 vision. if one eye is worse, he may need eye patching and vision therapy. Time in the sun without his glasses a little during the day could be good for the process of emmetropization. Have two comprehensive eye examinations per year and keep his lenses free of scratches and keep them well adjusted and properly fitted on his head.
I recommend following what your Optometrist recommended for the wearing schedule of his glasses. Sometimes the astigmatism increases as we age due to no fault of our own.
As a child, prescription normally changes yearly, but if your son's cylindrical power is strong enough, I'd recommend starting to wear glasses full time to eliminate the possibility of refractive amblyopia later in life.
Your son has astigmatism (cylindrical power), which is a problem with how the eye focuses light. If he has prescription glasses, then have him wear them...it should improve his vision and make it more comfortable for him to see both far and near. Make sure he doesn't rub his eyes, which can cause trauma to the cornea and change its curvature, so the result may worsen his astigmatism.
Cylinder power is a product eye shape (cornea and lens). This can change over time. Yearly eye exams are recommended as uncorrected astigmatism can lead to chronic headaches and blurred vision at all distances.
Cylindrical Power is Aldo called astigmatism. This is usually a hereditary condition . Some doctors prescribe gas permeable contact lenses to hold the front of the eye (cornea) in shape but this doesn’t prevent future changes permanently. At age 7 if he eyes are disease free, he should wear his glasses full time and have a yearly eye exam.
Hello, thanks for your question.
I understand your concern, what you have said is commonly called astigmatism, which is a very normal thing to have. Because of your son's age, make sure he wears glasses all the time (or as advised by the prescribing doctor). Also, make sure he spends more time in the outdoors as well, not just indoors looking at screens.
All you need for him is to get his eyes checked and if he needs astigmatism glasses, that's what he needs to wear.
