What is the course of treatment for periodontitis?

My mother has been diagnosed with periodontitis, and she's 67 years of age. What is the course of treatment for this condition?

Hello,

The treatment course for periodontitis (periodontal disease) usually depends on a number of factors. There are a few different periodontitis types, but someone that has just been diagnosed in in their 60s seems like it is a chronic periodontitis. Treatment for chronic periodontitis usually proceeds in the order of scaling and root planing (often referred to as "a deep cleaning"). A re-evaluation is usually done a few weeks after to make sure the gums are stable, followed by regular cleanings every 3 months instead of every 6 months. At each one of these cleanings the gums (gingiva) is evaluated and the goal is to get the person back to a cleaning every 4-6 months. If this does not work, sometimes surgical cleanings are introduced. This involves lifting up the gums to clean under them. Once the disease is under control, measures can be taken to fix the defects. Oftentimes, the normal order of operations does not seem to fit for one reason or another. Things that change the treatment order are variables such as schedules, traveling of the patient, and severity on the day of diagnosis. If the periodontitis is severe enough at the day of diagnosis; extraction of teeth can be recommended. This is usually the case when the doctor feels it is too far gone to save the tooth. Periodontitis is a condition that is very prevalent in the population. However, it is also miss-diagnosed for a lot of reasons in today's society. It is always helpful to get a second opinion and more information.
Hope this helps.

My best to you!

There are several options to treat periodontitis. This diagnosis means the gum disease is attacking the teeth's supporting structures. You can have scaling and root planing. Surgical opening of all four quadrants of the jaw, cleaning out the debris removal of bone and cutting of gum tissue. The latest treatment is LANAP-LASER ASSISTED NEW ATTACHMENT PROCEDURE. This treatment removes all gum disease bacteria and infectious tissue. The bone is treated. The body"s stem cells are stimulated. There is no cutting or sewing. There is less pain. Your mother is shown how she should be flossing and brushing her teeth. Depending on how the patient takes care of her mouth. This treatment can last 5 years or more. Your mother has to do something; doing nothing is not an option.
Cleaning scaling and possibly surgery depending on each case
Periodontal disease occurs when plaque and bacteria begin to destroy the bone around your teeth. Deep cleanings can stop the progression of periodontal disease and can help improve the health of your teeth and gums.
The course of treatment depends upon the severity of the disease process. Some people will only require deep cleanings and proper home care. Others may require surgical intervention. And some people may need some extractions if the tooth or teeth are beyond saving. You can always obtain a second opinion if you have doubts regarding the course of treatment that your dentist proposed or recommended.
Start the treatment with a dental professional and he/she will be able to tell you what kind of treatment procedures are the best for your mom. Without seeing a full documentation, suggestions may be misleading.
Periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss. Its treatment depends upon many conditions. Best to see a periodontist because they specialize in this disease.
Usually need frequent deep cleanings. May need some surgery in certain cases.
scaling and root planing in all quadratnt with gum pockets 5 mm. or greater. then reevaluation if pockets are still too deep to maintain, for surgery. treatment will not work unless she commits to daily flossing and regular follow up.
Generally a deep cleaning under local anesthesia is performed. Next periodontal surgery for those areas that do not respond to deep cleanings. Consult your Dentist for specifics.
It is good to know that is a life-lasting condition. She needs to have regular specialized cleaning at the dentist and have it under supervision. So, the level of bacteria will be remaining low. In extreme cases only, surgery is needed.
Due to general inflammation and a high level of bacteria, the ligaments which are keeping the teeth in their place are going to become more and more loose and at a certain moment the teeth themselves are going to become loose. Treatment with a prothese can be here recommended.
It is very broad answer. Your mother needs to be treated by Periodontist or general Dentist who is comfortable to do it. Treatment involves: local procedure, sometimes some medications, laser etc.
She may need full mouth scaling and root planing first to try to remove the buildup on the root surfaces. If her periodontitis is severe, she may need surgery after the scaling if her results are not improving. Sometimes, patients just need to be on a short cleaning schedule after the scaling and root planing.
Periodontitis is treated in two different ways depending on severity. Scaling and root plainkng is for less severe cases in which the patient is anesthitized to allow for appropriate cleaning. 6-8 weeks following treatment a re-evaluation should be completed to insure the patient is maintaining their oral hygiene and no areas of concern remain present. More severe cases require a surgical scaling and root plaining in which the gums need to be reflected back to allow access for the cleaning. This should be completed by a specialist. Certain laser treatments can be provided by appropriately trained individuals as well.
Once dignoswd with periodontitis the patient is always a periodontal patient. The disease is never gone however arrested. Constant follow up is required to maintain teeth as long as possible.
Referral to gum specialist and cleaning every 3 months. Good flossing and brushing helps a lot.
May include deep cleaning and then depending on progress potientially laser treatment or gum surgery
Proper diagnosis is the foundation for removal of any etiological factors associated with any of the periodontal disease. Peridontittis is a list of the ongoing periodontal disease which include degradation of the ligament which surrounds the root surface area of all teeth and the interdental gum tissue and associated infection thereof.
