Ear-Nose and Throat Doctor (ENT) Questions Nasal Polyps

My dad has been diagnosed with nasal polyps. Could it be serious?

My dad has recently been diagnosed with nasal polyps, which I think is the answer to his breathing issues. Could it be serious? What is often done for this?

Nasal polyps are generally not a "serious" condition per se. First, an exploration to try and determine the underlying etiology is necessary. This may help to tailor treatment for your father. Treatment is typically long-term medical management which usually involves the use of a nasal steroid preparation for maintenance. Surgery often plays a role as well but isn't curative as the underlying issue is an over aggressive inflammatory response.
Nasal polyps are usually the results of allergic problems or sinus infection. Tumors may also look like polyps so the best you can do is see your ent doctor and follow his indications.
Depending on degree of polyposis. Associated with sinus infection, nasal airway obstruction, exacerbation of asthma. See ENT. Allergy testing. Topical and oral corticosteroids, saline irrigations, surgical removal, sinus surgery. CT probably indicated.
