Pediatrician Questions Birthmarks

Do birthmarks ever go away?

My son has a birthmark on his leg that is very large and frankly, a little ugly. Do birthmarks ever go away on their own?

Most birthmarks do not go away but may fade with time - ask your pediatrician about the one you son has and what he thinks about it - whether or not it will fade or not or need further treatment in the future.
There are several different types of birthmarks. One of the most common in young children under 5 years is called a "strawberry" hemangioma. It starts out small as a newborn usually and then grows and enlarges to become a red raised unpleasant appearing lesion over the next 2-3 years and then it completely goes away usually by ages 4-6 years. To see if this is what your child has, go to Google images and type in "strawberry hemangioma" and you'll see if this is what your child has. If it's in a place that causes irritation, such as on the eyelid, in the genital area, etc., then a dermatologist may be able to remove it. If not uncomfortable, it will completely do away in a few years with no trace it was ever there.

Hello

Usually birth marks do not go away. If he is concerned, you can consult a dermatologist for further evaluation.
Most birthmarks do not go away. They may get a little smaller if they do not grow as much as they rest of the body. Strawberry marks are not present at birth but usually grow until about 1 year of age and they start fading
