Pediatrician Questions Hair Loss

Does combing one's hair too often cause hair loss?

My son is a teenager and he is obsessively combing his hair. The other day I noticed that his hair was starting to thin along the hairline. Is it possible that combing his hair too much is causing hair loss?

I do not think so. The answer is no.
If it is obsessively, yes, it could cause loss of hair due to constant pulling. That hair will come back when stopping this behavior.
You can get traction hair loss if he is combing and pulling on the hair root. The hair follicles goes through periods of loss but usually not excessive. If excessive he may need thyroid checked. He can also take vitamins for hair and nails that usually will strengthen the hair.
