Oncologist Questions CA-125

Does an elevated CA-125 indicate cancer?

After a recent blood test, my doctor said that I have a high level of CA-125. I had trouble understanding him while he was explaining what this means for me. Is this actually a sign that I have cancer or not?

Yes, CA-125 indicates the presence of cancer or other conditions. Not all patients with a high CA-125 result have cancer. The normal range is between 0 – 35 units per microliter (0 -35 U/mL). Levels over 35 U/mL may indicate the presence of cancer. Thank you.
Not always. Normal conditions and tumors alike may increase this level.
Not necessarily. Elevated CA-125 levels may be indicative of pancreatic or ovarian cancer. It could also mean that ovaries have multiple cysts in them. What it does mean that further investigation is required such as referral to a specialist, X-rays or possibly surgery.
Good luck.

Elevated CA-125 is not always indicative of cancer. There are certain cancers that are associated with an elevated CA-125.
