Surgeon Questions Hemorrhoids

Does hemorrhoids require a surgery?

My husband was diagnosed with hemorrhoids and they're not going away OTC medication and a high-fiber diet. Would he need surgery to remove them?

Yes, he may.
Hello and Happy New Year! The majority of hemorrhoids do not require surgery. In general, a reasonable surgeon will offer surgery if they prolapse, are painful, or bleeding is hard to control. As for surgery, there are different procedures. I recommend a real conversation with a proctologist as excision of them is not always necessary, and there are office procedures that may suffice.
Depending on whether they are internal or external hemorrhoids, they can sometimes be managed with banding in the office setting without needing to go to the operating room. If he continues to have difficulties after conservative management (medications, dietary changes, etc), surgery will likely be necessary.
