Speech-Language Pathologist Questions Slurred speech

Can high creatinine levels impact speech in a person?

My mother in law is a CKD patient and also has high blood pressure. Lately, her speech is becoming slurred. Is there a connection between her medical condition and her speech?

It sounds like her overall health is compromised so speech can be affected by that. If her speech is slurred, you might need to get a speech and swallowing evaluation with a medical speech therapist who does swallow studies. An overall speech and language evaluation with a swallow study may be necessary. Contact your insurance to see what's covered. Therapy might be able to rule out other concerns and give some tools to improve her clarity of speech.
Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, I cannot answer your question. Please pose your question to a licensed doctor. An endocrinologist may be able to provide you with a clear answer to this question. Good luck, and I hope your mother feels better soon.

I would have a consult/evaluation completed by a medical speech pathologist. Have them review her medications.
No. There is something else going on. See a neurologist. There are many conditions that can lead to slurred speech. Get a proper diagnosis.
Medications can have a negative impact on a person's speech. I recommend talking with your mother's doctor.
Yes, it depends on the person but yes there can be cases where slurred speech (dysarthria) can occur as chronic kidney disease advances. You can refer your mom to a speech language pathologist for an evaluation and treatment sessions to work on maximizing the ability for her to be better understood.
Kidney disease has been known to cause neurological deficits in patients. Although if your MIL is experiencing a change in condition, I strongly urge you to seek medical attention. A doctor could also answer the question better whether or not it is connected, in your MIL’s case
I would have to see more of her medical conditions to answer this. Usually speech is affected by what’s going on in the brain & impact on the body. So, I can’t say it is due to her being a CKD patient or having high blood pressure currently. However, her slurred speech is related to something & I’d recommend further treatment or testing to understand why this is occurring.
