Veneers are bonded into the enamel of the tooth
With a resin adhesive that chemically bonds to your teeth and the porcelain veneer.
Veneers get cemented on with a very specialized colorless cement which bonds it to the tooth.
Some of it's retentive in nature by the preparation, but most is by the adhesive glue that bonds to the teeth. Many of my patients have had their veneers for 20 years. But the veneers are for you and your dentist to discuss.
They are glued on top of your teeth
Porcelain veneers are bonded to the teeth. This is the way dental veneers are attached to the tooth. Veneers cannot be cemented; if one cements a veneer it will come off!
When a tooth is prepared for a veneer, a small amount of the outer layer of enamel is prepared (shaved away); The veneer then replaces this and also creates the desired new contour and shade. The veneer is made of ceramic and the inner side of the veneer that bonds to the tooth enamel is treated so the veneer cement can bond to it and then the veneer is bonded to the tooth enamel with the special veneer resin cement. The bond of the resin cement to enamel is very strong.
They are retained by the design of the preparation and a liquid, light cured resin.
The tooth and the inside of the veneer are cleaned with a mild acidic solution. The surfaces of both are coated with a bonding adhesive and sandwiched together. The adhesive is usually hardened by a special blue light that activates the chemical reaction. The dentist will meticulously clean the edges during and after the bonding procedure.
Each veneer is custom made to fit each individual tooth, therefore the amount of adhesive is minimal. When all of the edges are bonded to enamel, the connection is very strong.
