Anesthesiologist Questions General Anesthesia

How can I reassure my son about general anesthesia?

My son needs to have appendix removed, and he's beyond worried about the anesthesia. He somehow had gotten the idea that he would wake up during surgery. I tried telling him that this isn't possible and that he'll be fine, but he's not listening to me. What else should I say that can help reassure him?

You can have him tour the operating room and have an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist explain how anesthesia works. Anesthesia is not like regular sleep. We control how deep it is and we control when someone “wakes up” after the surgery is over.
