Ophthalmologist Questions Color Blindness

How can we tell if my son is color-blind?

My son is 3 years old and as we were trying to teach him colors, we had the thought that he might be color blind. How do we know and what can we do?

A complete ophthalmologic exam with specific color vision testing should be performed to determine if he is color blind.
See an ophthalmologist.
There is a ishihara color plate you may find online and ask him to read the numbers, if he couldn't that might be sign of being color blind. Any concerns, see an eye doctor.
Unfortunately, you can't find out on your own. He would need to be tested by an eye doctor. Just keep in mind that most 3-year-olds can't understand the color-blindness test, so he may not be able to take the test until he is a little older, but we can always try.
Best regards, color vision test can be performed at the eye doctor’s office.

An ophthalmologist can determine this. We have special tests, like the Ishihara color plates, that help us make these diagnoses, even in 3 year olds!! A pediatric ophthalmologist or neuro-ophthalmologist is especially adept at this!
You can try to text him by seeing if he can read the numbers on this website.

If he has difficulty in reading the numbers you should have him checked.
At three years, you can present different coloured balls like red, green, blue etc and look for his choice. If he cannot differentiate, then he is colour difficient, not necessarily blind. There is no treatment as its an inherited condition.
