How common is newborn jaundice?

My baby has jaundice and is receiving light therapy. How common is jaundice in a newborn?

Very common; however, the causes are varied. Almost all newborns have a small degree of jaundice in the first few weeks of life. But not all jaundice is the same. Many times it is benign, but other times it could indicate a problem. Best to discuss with your pediatrician the specific type of the jaundice your baby has, and to obtain relevant blood tests.
Jaundice is one of the most common problems in newborns. Phototherapy is usually effective and takes a few days. High bilirubin levels can cause brain damage so the phototherapy is used to prevent dangerous levels
