Dermatologist Questions Sunscreen

How do I know the right SPF for my skin type?

I have highly sensitive skin and it burns very easily. What is the best way to find out the best SPF number to suit my skin type? I'd still like to tan if possible.

Typically we suggest reapplying spf30 broad spectrum every 2 hrs
Use at least SPF 30 and try several brands to find one that is good for your skin type
The best sunscreen to use are the physical blockers, zinc and titanium. Although you might like a tan, it is still not good for you. It causes skin cancer and premature aging.
Sunscreens and sunblockers allow you to get color. They tend to burn off. That is why you need to reapply, generally every 2 hrs.

Aim for an SPF 30 or higher, in a formula you are willing to use every day. Apply the product generously to be sure you are covering all areas evenly, and combine sunscreen use with other sun-safe behaviors such as seeking shade, using hats/parasols, timing your outdoor activities to avoid midday sun whenever possible.
There is no such thing as a safe tan from the sun or any tanning bed. The presence of a tan is evidence that radiation has already penetrated the skin. To achieve color in a safe way, seek out bronzers, self-tanner topical products, or have spray tanning done professionally.
No matter what your skin type, we recommend an SPF of 30 or above. The safest type of sunscreen with the broadest spectrum of protection is that with the zinc oxide base. Zinc oxide is a stable compound and does not change chemical composition with sun exposure. There are many sunscreens on the market with a zinc oxide base. Some are thicker and therefore go on less transparent than others. We recommend Elta MD highly.

With any sunscreen, please remember to reapply every couple of hours. Also, protective clothing is a great way to protect yourself from the sun.
SPF 15 and over are okay. The best would be sunscreen that contain Titanium dioxide, zinc oxide that you can find in any pharmacy. But the best would have a 3rd ingredient iron oxide, like the one I had made for my office that blocks the whole spectrum of light.
