Good oral hygiene and regular dental appt.
Gum disease is mainly due to prolonged accumulation of microbes around your gums and teeth. Smoking, diabetes, poor oral hygiene and genetics also play an important rule for susceptibility of an individual to gum disease, best way to prevent it is to do proper brushing & flossing, to get cleanings twice daily and to have dental check-ups to make sure you are not having gum disease and if you ever have it, make sure to see a gum specialist (periodontist).
The best method of preventing gum disease is good oral hygiene techniques including brushing and flossing twice daily.
There is some hereditary aspect to gum disease. Assuming you are OK on that front; good oral hygiene (brushing after each meal & daily flossing), healthy habits (no tobacco use), and regular dental visits (exams & cleanings) every 6 months will help prevent gum disease.
Hi,

Gum disease probably the most common disease seen in populations. Initial diagnosis is bleeding gums, upon flossing or pressure. General rules include brushing teeth twice daily for 2 minutes each time, flossing daily and ideally between meals, rinsing your mouth after meals, and an antiseptic mouthwash if you desire. Visit your dentist every 6 months if possible for an exam and cleaning. Professional cleanings done at the dental office goes below the gums in areas, sites and depth where the toothbrush cannot reach. There is a genetic play, but it’s not a panacea to you getting gum disease if you are diligent with your oral care.
Hope this helps.
