It depends on what the source of instability is, to be honest. Sometimes, the instability comes from a connective tissue disorder, where the ligaments and tendons are a bit looser than the average person. However, in most cases, it's usually because of a lack of proper movement training, or previous injuries to stability structures in the ankles.
it depends. Sometimes an ankle stabilizing orthosis or taping ankle for sports activities in addition to Physical Therapy (PT). Usually, physical therapy to work on balance, propioception, strengthening, etc. If truly unstable and ligament tears on physical exam and MRI, then surgery may be needed to reconstruction ligament if the patient has failed sufficient physical therapy.
