iT CAN BE BLOOD WORK OR ULTRASOUND OR OTHER IMAGING. A MANUAL EXAM IS CRITICAL.
Fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, abnormal menstrual periods, and elevated cholesterol can occur. A blood test call a TSH will help to let you know.

Ask your doctor to order the proper blood tests. You can also get an ultrasound and if necessary, you will be sent to an endocrinologist.
Through blood work. Sometimes a nuclear thyroid scan is required to confirm the cause of overactive thyroid.
It is a very simple blood test that measures T4 (thyroid hormone) and TSH (the pituitary hormone) that stimulates the thyroid to produce thyroid hormone (T4). If your T4 is low and the TSH is high, this is diagnostic of the most common type of hypothyroidism (where the thyroid stops producing thyroid hormone -- an autoimmune syndrome called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis). The treatment is very simple and effective and involves taking one daily dose of T4 (thyroid hormone) and then later measuring the levels of your T4 and TSH. Once these are normalized and your symptoms have resolved, then you will continue taking this set does of thyroid hormone for the rest of your life.
Yes, if you have symptoms of thyroid disease you should be tested. Testing requires only taking a small bit of blood. You should have your Dr. feel your neck to see if the thyroid is enlarged or you have nodules. The Dr. then has the lab draw blood from your arm (this can be done as a part of a blood sample drawn for other reasons as a part of routine lab. The Dr. should order a Free T4 & TSH level> If the thyroid is enlarged the Gr should also order thyroid antibodies. These can be done on the same blood sample. So see your Dr.& explain your symptoms & get the test.
