This may depend on the severity of the situation. You should consult your dentist or oral surgeon for their recommendation. Salt water rinses can be started 24 hours after tooth removal and you can do them until you feel the pain is starting to subside; usually a week or so from the time of removal.
Typically, the recommendation to rinse with salt water is after a procedure (for example surgery) to keep food and bacteria from entering the gum tissue. If there is already an infection, the salt water will not treat it alone. Salt water for after an extraction or other procedure should be used for 3 to 5 days after the surgery.

Hope this helps,

Dear Reader,

I don't know what you mean by a "dental infection" so I have no answer for you. I suggest you visit a dentist to find out the best way to handle your infection and any post-treatment protocols.

Hope this helps.
