Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Questions Tooth extraction

How long does blood clot last after extraction?

I had a tooth extraction on one of my molars and now I have a blood clot in the area. I had my extraction three days ago, and the blood clot is still there. Is this normal?

Yes, it is normal to have the blood clot in the area of the tooth been removed. As a matter fact, it is very important to leave the blood clot alone, it needs to be there to help the healing process. If you remove it, the jaw bone will exposed to your oral cavity, it may cause dry socket, or infection of the jaw bone.
The blood cloth that forms after an extraction is important for for healing the extraction site. After the tooth is extracted, you are given instructions not to rinse your mouth for 24 hours. You are told not to smoke or suck out of a straw or soda can. If the cloth is lost too soon, you can develop a dry socket.
