How long does TMJ surgery last?

I am a 32 year old male and I am scheduled for TMJ surgery next week. How long does TMJ surgery last?

It depends, 2-6 hours.
TMJ surgery should only be a last resort following all other options. In the past 1,00 TMJ patients I have successfully treated, only 6 patients have needed TMJ surgery. Treatment options following following TMJ surgery are very limited and have very poor outcomes. Visit the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain.

How long have you been in pain? How many specialists have you seen? Are you aware that you can have the surgery and find when you wake up, you may still be in pain? Through our office's work with pain patients, we have found that conservative treatment is the best. If your problem is not resolved, there may be contributing factors that may be part of your problem.
It depends on your diagnosis and what procedure you are having done. Some more conservative options, like an arthroscopy, may have more of a tendency for relapse. More extreme surgeries, like a total joint replacement, may have a very long term expectation for stability. You should pose that question to your surgeon, and ask their experience with the particular procedure you are having.
