Medical Management Questions Type II Diabetes

How often should I monitor my blood sugar with type 2 diabetes?

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes recently, and I'm still learning how to manage it. How often should I be checking my blood sugar?

At least twice a day, every other day. First check should be as soon as you wake up and the second one just before you go to sleep. Keep a log book with your readings.
This answer depends on how controlled or uncontrolled your diabetes is. Generally doctors request testing sugar more frequently when A1C is above 8, and less often if less than 8.
Your sugar readings are used by your physician to help make medication changes to improve sugar control. So reach out to your doctor to see what you can do to help them manage diabetes better
It depends in the treatment you are currently for your diabetes. If in insulin and pills then you need to check at least 3 times a day. But if only on oral medication usually 1-2 times is ok. At the beginning of the diagnosis is good to check offen specially when you wake up and before and after a meal. This is the time you will learn how your sugar responds to certain foods. Also when adding or changing medication it’s good to check often to see if the medication/dose is working. But a controlled type 2 diabetic on oral medication one time is ok, again this is when you are in a steady treatment that does not jnvolve insulin.
You should be checking your, ideally, 4x/day. That may not be possible. You did not tell me your age. If you are older & on Medicare, they will pay for only 1/d. You can of course pay for them yourself if you can afford it. Rather than 1/d, I would prefer 4/d but not every day. When you do 1/d as Medicare wants you to do, you will probably check only your fasting in the morning & while this is the most valuable one, it is important to know how you are doing after meals. So I prefer 4x/d & do it 2-3 days/ week. The more the better & get a HbA1c every 3-4 mo.
