How to calm nerves before seeing a proctologist?

I am a 51 year old male who is going to the proctologist for the first time. I am very nervous and not sure what to expect. Can someone tell me what will happen so I can calm my nerves?

Generally, nothing terrible, and it's colon and rectal surgeon, not proctologist, which is an old speciality no longer being taught and is part of colon and rectal surgeons' domain.
It really depends on the reason for your visit but there is really no reason to be overly worried or nervous. Typically you would have a consultation in the office followed by an examination. The exam may include having a small diameter scope inserted in the rectum to help visualize your problem. Some types of problems do not require a scope, in which case the examination may be mostly visual. If you have an abscess or thrombosed hemorrhoid you may require a minor procedure in the office which may be slightly uncomfortable but you will be given a local anesthetic. It is hard to cover all possibilities but hopefully this will help to alleviate some of your anxiety.
