Psychiatrist Questions Suicide

How can I talk to my teen about suicide?

My daughter's friend told me that my daughter has been discussing with her about death and ending life. She's only 13 years old. I am worried as a parent how should I speak to my daughter. Please help.

By all means bring up the subject. She may need counseling.
Talk with your daughter when you can be calm, rational and sensitive to her emotions. Be direct about your concern about her unhappiness, depressed mood and her thoughts about suicide. Ask about what sort of help she might be open to ie talking to you, another family member, or a counselor.
