Treatment for a nine-year-old with a fractured forearm could range anywhere from just needing a cast to having surgery. It depends on the severity of the break.
It depends on how much displacement occurred with the fracture. Minimally displaced fractures can be treated in a cast but if there is more displacement they may need to be put back in normal alignment.
These injuries are usually treated by orthopedic surgeons. The treatment depends on the bone involved and the fracture pattern. Most of the time, there will some form of immobilization such as a cast or brace until the bone is healed enough to start movement. On average, this will be about six weeks. She may require a procedure to realign the bone and, in some cases, metallic fixation will be indicated to hold the fracture in place until it heals.
The majority of Pediatric fractures if they are displaced can be treated by a closed reduction and casting in a hospital setting. Some may require supplemental fixation with either pins or more really, screws and plates. This would depend on the location of the fracture, the age of the patient as well as the amount of displacement of the fracture.
