Is acupuncture effective for migraines?

I'm 35 years old, and I sometimes get really bad migraines. I'm thinking about getting acupuncture to help cope with them. Is acupuncture effective for migraines?

Yes, 10 treatments 2 per week for 5 weeks. 95% of patients are migraine-free after that.
50% of the time, I treat patients with migraines. 6 visits show significant improvement. Some patients came back three years later and reported no migraines, but ask for treating of the neck or knee pain.
Yes, very effective. I often give my patients acupuncture along with an herbal decoction customized specifically for you to optimize the effectiveness. Acupuncture alone however can and does effectively treat and eliminate migraine headaches for many patients.
It can be. Have you gotten an MRI to rule out anything more serious? If so, then acupuncture ALONE may not be enough. Is there anything in your home or work environment that could be toxic to your health? Do you have carbon monoxide detectors in your home/work? You also have to look into your diet....certain foods such as caffeine, chocolate, spicy foods, and so on, can make migraines worse or more frequent. I know for myself I get them because of severe arthritis in my neck. When I do stretching, massage, daily neck rolls, etc, they aren't nearly as frequent or severe. Doing yoga, tai chi and the like can strengthen the muscles that may be tight and contributing to the headaches. Other factors such as not getting enough or quality sleep, living in a damp or dusty environment, eating late at night, not exercising at all can certainly affect migraines. Looking into these things and making lifestyle changes should get you on the right road. Good luck!!!
It absolutely is!

Hello,

Absolutely! I have treated several patients for migraines, as well for other severe headaches. Acupuncture can help to reduce the symptoms of a migraine during an actual episode. Long-term, it can also help to not only reduce the number of migraines you may experience but also lessen the quantity and severity of any symptoms you may have that accompany the migraines (i.e. nausea, fatigue, pain, light sensitivity). Some people are even able to find complete relief. However, this depends on the overall health of the patients in addition to the potential cause of the migraines (i.e. some are caused by overuse of medicine, onset of their periods, excessive emotions, etc), and the care they give to going to treatments.
Good evening. Yes! Acupuncture is incredibly effective in resolving headaches and migraines. Our practices utilized many other modalities along with acupuncture to resolve migraines.
Please go to Google and type in "30 year headache, acupuncture." That man had 30-year non-stop headache and they went away in two minutes.
Thank you for your question,

There are sufficient evidence that Acupuncture can treat migraines. I have also attached a link to an article that reviews other alternatives.

I also recommend neuromodulation using Gammacore of which has been approved in the US for migraines. Most insurances cover this. If not GammaCore also offers a 12 month free trial period to some patients. American headache society recommends this treatment as well.

Most definitely it helps. The acupuncturist will balance the hormones and chemicals of the brain and open up blood flow to the brain circulation.
Yes, it is very effective for migraines, but the practitioner will need to make an assessment as to the root of the migraine. It may take a few sessions, but in time they should reduce if not clear. Be sure to find a Licensed Acupuncturist in your area (L.Ac.) if your first choice isn't working, feel free to find another. Just like any other service, some people fit better, some people don't.

Good luck.
Acupuncture can be extremely effective for migraines. I have a patient who comes in every 2 weeks and he can avoid getting them at all when he sticks to that schedule. Acupuncture can also lower or eliminate an active migraine if you're lucky enough to be able to get into your practitioner at short notice.
