Psychiatrist Questions Depression

Is Contrave safe for weight-loss?

My psychiatrist prescribed me Contrave to help with weight loss, after I showed some progress with my diet and exercise. Is this a safe medication? I heard that this medication can cause suicidal thoughts, so I'm a little worried because of my history with depression (which I also made a lot of progress in)

Brief moments of suicidal thoughts can occur from any antidepressant. One of the ingredients is buproprion, an antidepressant
I am not familiar with Contrave, but I do not favor medication for weight loss. Generally, lasting weight loss requires a combination of a change in diet [Mediterrranean preferably], portion control, and regular exercise.
Any time you ingest a chemical, there are risks. If it is helpful for your overall health, then it may work out. Contrave contains an antidepressant (buproprion), which is often used to augment depression treatment and naltrexone, which blocks opioid receptors. It is difficult to predict response, so you should stay in close contact with your prescribing physician to let them know of any changes in your mood.
