Anesthesiologist Questions Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Is general anesthesia safe for wisdom teeth removal?

I'm going to have my wisdom teeth removed next week, and my dentist suggested to have it under general anesthesia. Is general anesthesia safe for wisdom teeth removal? I was under the impression that this is done under local anesthesia.

It depends on your tolerance and impaction of the teeth. Wisdom teeth can be horizontally place, have a cyst formation, etc.
Yes, if performed by qualified people.

General anesthesia is routine for removal of wisdom teeth, especially depending on the position of the teeth. If they are impacted or other circumstances, general anesthesia is used. I would definitely have an oral surgeon who is certified complete it and not just a dentist that does oral surgery.
General anesthesia does carry risks. Your doctor and his staff have been trained and YOU are constantly being monitored. WISDOM TEETH can be extracted with local anesthesia. It is your DECISION. It is really up to the patient.
Your dentist was probably referring to "Conscious Sedation" which is administered through an IV for your wisdom teeth removal procedure. It differs from general anesthesia (complete loss of consciousness and muscle control) in that the level of your consciousness will not be as altered. You will experience a lessening in awareness, but will feel capable of responding to external stimuli (tactile or verbal). You will get local anesthetic in addition to the conscious sedation. I recommend IV sedation when getting wisdom teeth removed as it does provide an extremely comfortable experience while having the surgery performed.
