Whichever makes you feel better. I am a fan of cold
The majority of the body seems to like cold better except for the neck and low back which prefer heat.
First thing to do is get a proper diagnosis. This has been a chronic problem you need to see a specialist. If it’s an acute problem you would use ice and if it did not resolve over the first few days you Should see a specialist.
YES! Meaning which makes it feel better? After that, in general, heat before an activity, ice after. Real question is why does it hurt? Without a specific injury, in your age, a ganglion cyst is first option. Some can be felt with your finger, some not. Very unlikely to be anything serious. Topical CBD Oil would be an option.
Depends on how long the pain has been going on, if early consider (cold). If longer time frame, use heat with topical ointment.
Best to cycle both, to improve blood flow. Always finish with ice for 5 minutes, up to 20 minutes with the cycles.
For pain and swelling: ice over thin towel (prevent frostbite) for 30 minutes every couple of hours. If stiff then warm moist water to loosen up & stretch / range of motion exercise - if painful after exercises then may ice again.
Typically ice for acute pn and heat for chronic
