Podiatrist (Foot and Ankle Specialist) Questions Ingrown Nail

Is the pain in my toe because of an ingrown toenail?

I'm 26 years old, and I have bad pain in one of my toes. I think it could be from an ingrown toenail. Is this possible? What's the treatment for it?

Depends on the shape of the nail growing. seek consult with podiatrist and full exam can be done for full and definitive answer you are looking for.

It's best to be evaluated by a specialist
Ingrown toenails can be very painful. The treatment is to remove the ingrown portion and perform a permanent treatment so that it does not regrow in that part of the nail. A podiatrist can do this best
An ingrown toenail can cause pain in the toe, but there are also several other possibilities for the cause of your pain.
It could very likely be an ingrown nail also could be if you had an injury to the toe. Treatment would be removal of the ingrown by a podiatrist
This will progress if left untreated and may cause a severe infection. Usually, primary care and urgent care send me patients because they under treat the patients or don't know how to treat it well.
Hello,

Ingrown toenails can be conservatively treated with Epsom salt soaks, Neosporin and tapered cotton tip applicators to help life the edge of the nail up. If this fails you need to see a podiatrist to inject and numb the toe and cut out the infected border.

Could be. Go visit the nearest podiatrist for an evaluation
The pain may very well be from an ingrown toenail. You should be able to see it at the painful edge. You may also see redness or pus. If you aren’t sure see a podiatrist and they can easily remove the painful nail.
Ingrown toenails can be remedied by either trimming the offending piece of toenail or there is a simple procedure that can be performed by podiatrist to remove that portion of the toenail to try prevented from reoccurring.

The pressure of the nail against the skin maintains the nail groove.
If you cut down into the nail groove the skin will overgrow the groove and as the new nail grows in it will pierce the skin causing an infection. If you have pain in the area you can soak in Epsom salts let the nail grow out. If pain persists see a Podiatrist and get professional help before you create a worse problem requiring surgery to alleviate your pain and infection
Hello,

If the pain is near the edge of the nail then it is probably an ingrown nail. You need to have the ingrown nail cut away. You can try this at home or see a professional.

Absolutely!! Go see a professional. If you try to mess with it, you could just be making the problem much worse.
If the pain is localized to the corner or edge of the nail it is the most likely cause.
There is always a possibility that pain in the toes can be secondary to ingrowing toenails. There is no way of knowing without seeing the toes. The treatment is usually removal of the offending borders. I recommend evaluation by a specialist.
There are a lot of possible causes for pain in your toe. One of them definitely includes an ingrown toenail. The treatment for an ingrown toenail is a procedure in the office to remove the affected part of the toenail.
If the nail is digging into the skin and the area is red or releasing pus, then yes, and you should see your doc. You can also soak the foot in 20 mins of warm salty water to see if that helps.
Ingrown toenails may definitely be a cause of toe pain. There are other causes of toe pain, however, and without seeing you as a patient, it is difficult to discern exactly what the problem is. If it is an ingrown toenail, you have to discern if it is infected or just painful because it is ingrown. Either way, the offending border must be removed to alleviate the infection, or to prevent a new infection. The best thing to do would be to make an appointment with a local Podiatrist in your area to have your problem evaluated and your treatment options explained.
Toe pain can be due to an ingrown toenail. I recommend you be evaluated by a foot and ankle surgeon (podiatrist) to determine if your toe pain is due to an ingrown toenail or another cause
