Optometrist Questions Eye Infections

Is steam bath bad for eyes?

I read in a recent article that a steam bath could be harmful for the eyes. However everyday as a routine after my gym I head for a 10 minutes steam bath. Should I discontinue this practice or can I exercise any precautions?

Steam bath is fine.
The steam bath is good for the whole body, including the eyes, particularly for dry eye syndrome and blepharitis.
This is no harm to your eyes.
No, it is fine. If you are wearing contact lenses, I would take them out first. Enjoy your steam!
My professional opinion is that steam baths are ok - and in some cases actually advisable - for eye health. I would make sure that you stay well hydrated and if, at any time, you feel that your eyes become uncomfortable, you can use OTC artificial lubrication (no redness-relievers), as needed. If any other discomfort persists, follow-up with your eye care provider.

The only thing that comes to mind is that there may be bacteria in the air or steam that could lead to infection. I recommend that my patients don’t wear their contact lenses in a steam bath to avoid infection. The steam is actually a nice dry eye relief in some cases and may feel nice.
A steam bath will not harm your eyes unless the steam actually has a toxic agent within it. In your case, it sounds as if it is just water, so no, it will not harm you.
Hello, thanks for the question. Steam bath for 10 minutes a day will not do any harm to the eyes. Enjoy!
Steam bath should be okay
