Emergency Physician Questions Strep Throat

Is strep throat a reason for an emergency visit?

I think my son has strep throat but the doctor's office is closed on the weekend. Do you think strep throat is serious enough for the ER? Or should I wait until his regular doctor is opened? He's 8 years old.

Rule of thumb--If you are concerned take him in to the ER. Strep will usually go away on its own in a few days, however antibiotics are given to protect the Heart and Kidneys.
Strep throat is usually not an emergency medical condition and may be managed easily in your doctor's office or Urgent Care Clinic. Throat infections may be serious, and in need of emergency care, if there are concerns for airway obstruction, inability to handle secretions (drooling), or ill appearance suggesting an overwhelming infection.
