Neurosurgeon Questions Adderall

Is there a surgery to treat ADHD?

My son has just been diagnosed with ADHD and I am desperate to get him treated. Is there a surgery that can treat this problem? The doctor recommended him taking Adderall but I would rather not give that to him--unless it's a last resort.

Unfortunately, there is no surgical treatment available for ADD. Adderall is much safer than any surgery could ever be.
The approach to treating ADHD is usually medical and involves behavioral neurology/psychology/psychiatry/education teams. The last resort for malignant ADHD that has failed medical management can involve surgery if the ADHD is associated with disabling tics or extreme aggression. It is not common and really should be done on a research protocol.
I would highly advise any surgery. Also would not prescribe Adderall myself. Neurofeedback has shown some remarkable results, and would be worth a try.
NO, there is no surgery to treat ADHD. Some forms of deep brain stimulation (DBS) are being tested to treat depression but not ADHD. Perhaps in the future?
Hi there,

Thanks for the question.

There is no surgery for ADHD. If you want to avoid medication - which I think is reasonable at first - then what I recommend is this:

Limit the exposure to different sensations simultaneously.

So, what I mean by that is, if he is doing homework for school (for example), then you take away anything else that can take his focus away from homework — so, no phone, no TV, no one else playing in the room, no music, etc.

Then, when he is not doing homework he needs to take about 15 mins a day and try to meditate. He can take a candle and stare at the flame and nothing else. This will help him control his thought patterns. He does not need to control his thoughts, only his gaze (staying on the flame).

Hope that helps,
