Geriatrician Questions Bipolar Disorder

What types of medications are used to manage bipolar disorder?

My father has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He is hesitant to take medications because of his age (he's 72) but he accepts he should try for the sake of his mental health. What would you suggest he research?

The most reliable sources might be the National Depression and Bipolar Alliance website and the National Institutes of Mental Health website. The National Library of Medicine (PubMed) often also has review materials that may be helpful.
Lithium Lomotrigine Depakote etc., but under good psychiatric care.
Mood stabilizers and some times depression and anxiety medications in combo
